Color

Color realism tattoos

Fully saturated work, for pieces meant to be seen from across a room.

Color realism asks for a different discipline than black and grey. The blends have to be packed properly or they go patchy, the palette has to be decided before the first line goes in, and the piece has to be designed to survive the way color settles over the first year.

Some pieces are better in color and some are not, and you will get an honest opinion on which yours is. A portrait usually wants black and grey. A jaguar warrior headdress, a tiger, or a sleeve of lilies usually wants color.

Plenty of the work here is both: a black and grey composition with one element carrying all the color, which is often the strongest version of the idea.

Questions

Does color hold up over time?

Black pigment is usually carbon and tends to hold its tone longest. Color pigments shift more, and some hold far better than others, which is why the palette gets decided before the first line.

Can I mix color with black and grey?

Yes, and it is often the strongest version of the idea. A black and grey composition with one element carrying all the color.

Does color take longer?

Usually, because the blends have to be packed properly or they go patchy. Expect more sittings than the same design in black and grey.
